Ship Engine Repair Service
May 20, 2021WHAT IS UNDERWATER INSPECTION SERVICE
Underwater inspection service is a regular or sudden survey, but necessary depending on each specific case and risk assessment. The survey of the submerged part of a ship’s hull is a mandatory procedure for every ship, regardless of the type of ship and cargo carrying capacity. Underwater surveys are necessary to assess the general and detailed technical condition of the submerged part of the ship’s hull before docking, buying, selling ships as well as an essential part in the scope of the ship certification assessment.
In most cases, underwater inspection is conducted under the supervision of a Surveyor, and the companies providing diving survey services must be evaluated by the Registry for their capability and recognized to be competent to perform this service.
IMPORTANCE OF UNDERWATER INSPECTION SERVICE By using professional underwater inspection services, we can find many potential issues that may gradually damage the ship. You can instantly identify when propeller blades are bent or damaged, ship hulls are cracked or corroded, propeller shaft seals are leaking, rudder damage, blocked sea valves, and many other common issues. Through a thorough inspection process, the diving team provides a detailed report outlining all the issues with the ship and potential remedial solutions.
This report enables ship owners to understand the actual condition of their ship, helping owners decide whether to repair this damage immediately or not. In most cases, repairs are often advised to be performed as soon as possible, as the ship’s condition will increasingly deteriorate and can cause safety-related issues, expensive repair costs, and the ship being out of operation for several weeks.
WHEN TO CONDUCT UNDERWATER INSPECTION
Underwater inspection instead of dry docking
Damage after grounding or collision with another ship
Assessment of the technical condition of the ship before buying, selling, or chartering
Assessment of fouling and paint layer corrosion on ship hull preparing for dry dock
Applying for or renewing ship operating license
HOW IS UNDERWATER INSPECTION SERVICE CONDUCTED
Underwater inspection service is carried out in the harbor or outside the anchorage. A special permit is needed to carry out this service. Therefore, underwater inspection should be conducted by a specially trained diving team with necessary equipment.
An underwater Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system is used to display underwater images during the survey.
The results of the inspection are recorded in the diving report and handed over to the shipowner along with the images and videos that capture the survey results.
The diving report and copies of videos or color images are sent to the captain and the Registry.
